{"id":1905,"date":"2017-02-06T17:30:00","date_gmt":"2017-02-06T22:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/67.225.189.109\/~davgri72\/vets\/?p=1905"},"modified":"2021-02-06T17:35:47","modified_gmt":"2021-02-06T22:35:47","slug":"animal-welfare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.acushot.ca\/animal-welfare\/","title":{"rendered":"Animal Welfare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the next few months we\u2019ll continue to explore some of the most significant issues that are \u201cMaking a Difference\u201d in our food supply and how we as \u201cconsumers\u201d can impact these challenges.<\/p>\n<p>In our last edition of \u201cMaking a Difference\u201d \u201cAnimal Welfare\u201d, we reviewed the renewed interest in how the livestock that\u2019s a part of our food chain are treated. We want to delve a little deeper into that conversation in today\u2019s edition <strong>\u201cAnimal Welfare\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As we discussed last month, many of us are ignorant about where our food comes from or how our animals are treated.<\/p>\n<p>But\u2026.we know that change is happening. According to the American Humane Society,\u00a0 <strong><em>\u201cmore than nine out of ten respondents (95%) in our latest Humane Heartland Farm Animal Survey expressed that they were \u201cvery concerned\u201d about farm animal welfare. Over three-quarters (76%) of survey participants were also very willing to pay more for humanely produced eggs and dairy products, and humanely raised meat. And in rankings of the importance of food labels, \u201chumanely raised\u201d scored highest. Interestingly, however, more than half of respondents (55%) reported that products branded humanely raised were either not available (36%) or too expensive (19%).\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u201cScience-based policy is at the center of the American Humane Certified program, which enforces common sense and attainable, albeit rigorous, welfare standards to ensure and verify humane practices. This criterion \u2013 determined by an independent scientific advisory committee comprised of leading experts in the fields of agriculture, species-specific animal behavior, and ethics \u2013 is centered around the internally accepted <strong>Five Freedoms<\/strong> of animal welfare, ensuring that certified animals have appropriate space, lighting, air quality, food and water. These <strong>Five Freedoms<\/strong> are globally recognized as the gold standard in animal welfare, encompassing both the mental and physical well-being of animals; they include: <strong>freedom from hunger and thirst; freedom from discomfort; freedom from pain, injury, and disease; freedom to express normal and natural behavior<\/strong> (e.g. accommodating for a chicken\u2019s instinct to roost); and freedom from fear and distress.\u201d<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/blog\/five-freedoms-the-gold-standard-of-animal-welfare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/blog\/five<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/blog\/five-freedoms-the-gold-standard-of-animal-welfare\/\">&#8211;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/blog\/five-freedoms-the-gold-standard-of-animal-welfare\/\">freedoms<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/blog\/five-freedoms-the-gold-standard-of-animal-welfare\/\">&#8211;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/blog\/five-freedoms-the-gold-standard-of-animal-welfare\/\">the<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/blog\/five-freedoms-the-gold-standard-of-animal-welfare\/\">&#8211;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/blog\/five-freedoms-the-gold-standard-of-animal-welfare\/\">gold<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/blog\/five-freedoms-the-gold-standard-of-animal-welfare\/\">standard<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/blog\/five-freedoms-the-gold-standard-of-animal-welfare\/\">&#8211;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/blog\/five-freedoms-the-gold-standard-of-animal-welfare\/\">of<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/blog\/five-freedoms-the-gold-standard-of-animal-welfare\/\">&#8211;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/blog\/five-freedoms-the-gold-standard-of-animal-welfare\/\">animal<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/blog\/five-freedoms-the-gold-standard-of-animal-welfare\/\">&#8211;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/blog\/five-freedoms-the-gold-standard-of-animal-welfare\/\">welfare\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Animal welfare is one of the driving forces behind the development of AcuShot\u2019s innovative second generation <strong>Needle-Free<\/strong> technology.
